How Exciting!
There's a scene in Night at the Museum that has always stayed with me. It's simple but powerful. Larry, the night guard, has just lost his job. He's defeated, uncertain, and says quietly: "I don't know what I'm going to do tomorrow." Teddy Roosevelt, the wax figure come to life, replies with a smile: "How exciting."
The first time I heard it, I didn't think much. But years later, while I was on at work placement in Latvia, far from home and full of doubts, I saw that quote again — and it hit me hard. For some reason, it made me cry.
Because I was Larry. I didn't know what I was going to do the next day. Or the next month. And in those moments of fear and uncertainty, someone saying "how exciting" felt like a small act of hope.
That line reminded me that not knowing what comes next isn't always a curse. Sometimes, it's a gift. A chance to begin again. A moment where anything can happen.
We often fear the unknown because it feels like we're lost. But maybe we're not lost. Maybe we're just at the edge of something new. Something better.
So, if you ever find yourself unsure of tomorrow, try to remember Roosevelt's words. Say them out loud, even if you don't believe them yet.
"How exciting."
